If your tank has only been setup a month with zero nitrates and only one water change your tank is not cycled regardless of filtration as filtration actually produces nitrates and does NOT remove them. Im not familiar with that purigen, but it most work really well for there not to be any nitrates and only one water change in a month! You did cycle your tank properly didnt you?

the tank has been set up a year but he has only done 1 waterchange a month ago from what i understand my tank never reads nitrates but i know there is...

I would go and buy a better test kit and test the waters again. Could have deffective test.

I would start doing more water changes right away. Rays are very sensitive to water conditions.

as far as i know, the tank was cycled correctly. and i will start doing more water changes. the purigen just removes fine particles in the water, almost like a diatom filter.

did you get a new test kit! I've never known a 0 Nitrate reading My tap water has 5ppm so i can never get to 0, and with 30% water changes twice a week it's always about 15 to 30ppm

You most definately need to increase water changes.
And get a new test kit. Something is wrong with yours lol.....

the ray is fine, the spot has completely healed up. I thing he may have gotten to close to the heater or something. he is also eating normally again.

thats great news:D
