How quickly do you guys move your pups into a separate tank? I only ask because if and when my Hystrix has pups they will need to come out almost immediately because my catfish will eat them like potato chips .... I'm planning on just filling my 40 gallon breeder with the same water from their birth tank and use the same biological media in the new tank as well by settting up a quick sump and use only seeded bio balls from their birth tank .... any chance of this working? Any thoughts are welcome ....

Wherever possible leave the pups in the tank they were born it, they don't require lots of space, use a partition with holes in to allow for flow, this can be fitted approx 8"-10" from one end of the aquarium so not taking much room away from the adults. If your going to set up a separate nursery do so well in advance making sure it is properly cycled with some fish before hand, I find that setting up systems the night before are not as stable as you might think, a good reliable filter takes months to establish.....certainly where rays are concerned.
Good luck with the birth.

I have to move my pups right away otherwise the adults will trample them. I have a 50 gal plumbed to the big tank so there is no chemistry change

Thanks Trev, gives me hope that this can be done .... I agree with you 100% aqua man, whenever I've used some seeded bio balls in a new tank, my tank cycles anyway, albeit quicker and less extreme, however I've never used all seeded bio balls so I was hopeful it may work .... I also figure I can do so many water changes in a 40 gallon easily so I can work to keep any cycling spikes negledgeable, but I agree it will be risky .... my issue with a cage is that I don't think I'll be able to make it heavy enough that the goonches won't just move it, since they toss around my big pieces of driftwood like their nothing .... I know I've got time, to think this through, I just don't want to make a last second decision, and the female seems to be getting fatter and fatter everyday

I use a 150 gallon with a wet/dry filter as a pup tank. The tank's only permanet resident is a 12" ghost knife. When the pups are born I catch them ASAP in a net and just plop them in the 150. I have done this with lots of pups with no problems.I think they are happy to be away from the adults and the birth water.

I never rely thought about the birth water being a little dirty thats a good point

Im sure as long as the seperate tank is well established and same parameters as the birth tank there shouldnt be any problems

Awesome, thanks old fish, and thanks trev ..... I guess my biggest concern would be the possibility of a mini-cycle even with using all seeded bio-balls .... I will have to watch water params very closely .... I'm still toying with the idea of putting them in my 220, and forgetting about the 40, I just don't trust the water as there are a few fish in there not doing great, and I have the pH a little higher in that tank, and I won't be able to use water from their birth tank either

Try to connect a small tank to the main system that way the tank water is the same

This is what I done a small 1000 lph pump pumps water from the main tank then drains back to the main tank via overflow

Or I made a cage from egg crate in the past put it on top of the pups with a rock on top

The tank is 30 long x 14 wide

T1 that looks like a pita to get into. More so when dealing with rays.
