just curiuos how come nobody in this discusion has not talked about Uv sterilizers?Do they hurt the rays?

In my experience UV takes more work that what it actually gives you. It's very 'ray safe', but scrubbing the tank is easier.

You need to look at what feeds algae: Light, nitrate and phosphate.
To fight algae, fight what it needs to live.

I contacted Wetwebmedia because of a brown algae infesttion. They recomended 2 plants that are nitrate sponges, Amazon Frogbit and Indian Fern. It took me awhile but I finally found some frogbit from a member in Socal. It's been in my 240 gal. for about a month now and seems to have just started to reproduce. The frogbit is a small floating plant.

thanks zoodiver .Ya i was just wondering!

UV does a good job at killing the algae that is in the water but does nothing to kill the algae that is growing on the glass or decor.

I just don't think there is a fish out there that will keep a monster tank algae free. Especially once any algae eater gets a taste for the food you feed your monsters. Then they could care less about algae. If you want something living then plants are the way to go. Start a sump with some hyacinth in it. I have a 2 x 3 area in my koi pond that I put them in and they keep a 600 gallon pond clean and it stays in direct sunlight.
