Ray sudden death syndrome?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To many fish in a small tank. plecos also will suck onto the disc removing the slime coating or the ray and up the chances of disease. the royal pleco could be doing this at night when they are more active and you wouldn't even know it. Rays produce so much waste by themselves they could easily overload your bio-mass. Also over crowding can stress the ray out. Rays are a relatively new species to the home aquarium and you just never know. You could have parasites preexisting on the ray and it can take weeks or months for them to kill the ray. Test water multiple times a day, and perhaps buy a bigger tank 180+ before you buy another ray. good luck.

I had thought this too, the pleco that is, but I never saw any marks on the ray that would lead me to think that he was being sucked on. I guess I'm just going to have to upgrade to my 330 before I try any more rays.

agreed.....

You should have noticed some wounds on the ray from a pleco though.

You also have these right?? 2 indo dats, 1 tig, 4 bp's, 1 royal pleco.

my personal experience on wild caught marble sds...
actually no ideas... check all my water, all ok
wc 30% at least 3x a week with aged water... i assume should be anti chlorine that i using is not good enough. Previously i'm using Tensiongone... but when i switch to Stress Coat, no more death issue (touch wood)...

yeah some rays will produce ten times the urine in freshwater and has to be cleaned alot
