Ray Tank - Odor?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Using carbon won't negatively impact your BB...but it does make sense to replace it regularly as it becomes ineffective pretty quickly.

It also couldn't hurt to siphon any gunk that's in the tank. Drip systems are great for changing water but don't get the pieces...which can stink.

Matt

Carbon should work, but keep in mind it also removes ammonia which is what the BB eats. So the amount of BB will decrease. Should be fine, just need to remember to replace the carbon on a regular basis so nothing leeches back into the system or causes the tank to cycle.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

i too have noticed massivore stinks - my mrs hates it! thats all i feed lol twice a day

my 9" male motoro won't eat anything except for massivore as well and lemme tell you that stuff stinks! Also makes a huge mess so I only feed once every 3 days.

I do not think a ray eating once every 3 days is very healthy for a high metabolism fish. Little and often is what these guys need

What are you guys feeding instead of massivore? Is there another pellet that is less 'smelly'? Or are you guys just doing all fresh seafood?

Hikari sinking gold and hikari sturgen are both good alteratives to massivore, try mixing all 3 types of pellet just dont add so much massivore, it works for me.

Do you mix these three in equal portions or more of some vs the others?

nls is by far the best quality food out there hands down. massivore is great but keep feedings light as it has a super high ash content. also the ingredients are not to impressive. very poor quality of ingredients IMO. alot of fillers and not as pure ingredients as NLS(new life spectrum). nls uses natural whole ingredients not fillers. just like dog food look at the first five lol

heres the run down on the two foods i will list the first 5 ingredients and u be the judge!

NLS Thera-A lg fish formula 3mm pellet(they make bigger pellets):

whole antarctic krill, whole herring, whole wheat, algae, garlic.

Massivore:

fish meal, krill meal, starch, brewers dried yeast, fish oil,

seems NLS has it beat as for quality. also nls lists the exact viatmin content massivore say "vitamin oil"

seems to me that nls is a quality restaurant meal and massivore is more along the lines of a somewhat better fast food place.

luckily my tank hasn't been stinking because i only feed earthworms... rays will not touch anything else yet :irked: tried tilapia, market shrimp, massivore, sinking pellets, silversides, DIY food, etc and no luck, they stick their noses up at it. now, my other tank that i do feed pellet type foods always smells worse. it's not like "OH YUCK!" but there is a noticeable smell when your nose is over the top of the tank. i'm pretty sure it's just due to the prepared fish foods you can get in the stores. lots of them stink (to attract the fish, like sport fishing i'm assuming)

Update, I increased my drip rate in the main system and feeding less massivore and the odor is not an issue any longer. Was for sure the massivore causing the issue.
