Rays and Cichlids ?

I'd suggest keeping any type of aggressive cichlid a no-no with rays, I hear of some Geos being OK with rays but when the rays get large enough and they can trap a fish under their disc, they'll do a number on them, if not eat them........but it can come down to trial and error, but as I suggested it's not worth it unless you got $$$ to burn and don't care about the individual animals at risk.
 
geophagus/rays are a good combo. But you can keep rays with most earth eaters. And lots of other cichlids.
 
I have kept a pair gold severums with my motoros. They got along fine.

Rays will naturally uplift plants and wood in search of food. Cichlids might pick out the eyes of your rays, pick on their tails, or in general bully them around. If thats the the case then you must worry about a ray sucking the eyes out of your cichlid or generally eating them considering their ultimate size differences.

These are just some of the things you must consider with this combo. Is it 100% fail rate? No, stranger things have happened but the likelihood of the combo working is slim. Thou im always one to take a chance and risk, just be ready and knowledgeable about it with a backup plan when and if things go wrong!

I would suggest two different tanks. One for rays and one for cichlids!

All in all pretty right.. Cichlids can be mixed with rays, pending what they are. Lets remember pbass are cichlids, so are snooks, other semi aggressive species that get big.

Convicts/oscar just aren't in the same boat as rays. I fear the convict or both could be ray food. And I would not suggest substrate in a ray tank with digging cichlids.

Oscar/convict don't need a huge tank, where a ray for the most part is going to need a much bigger tank. So gr8 is right in thinking just get another tank for a ray.
