A pvc cover won't restrict the heater much if there is enough flow around it.

the china brand companies offer a heater guard, it's a pretty nice looking contraption and I'm sure you can find them on Ebay. I saw some at a LFS.
I've had a hydor 300watt inline heater for a few months now. Works very well, and no one sees it, especially the rays. Best option in my opinion, better than heater in sump.

i run 1 of the hydor 300w on each of my eheim pro 3s for over 5 years with no problem they are great
the only problem is they dont work on that crap fx5 hose come to think of it nothing works on that crap hose
if you dont want the hydor efi 300w then buy a heater gaurd they are soooooo cheap and look much better than a gheto home made thing

Inline are cool and will work well.probably let us know what you get so we can know all the pros and cons and how it's working for you.
