They do! They also make a difference in your bio-filter.

Keep in mind, that when you have lots of live plants, they consume Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate in all 3 stages.. this tends to weaken your biofilter.

In this particular scenario, I removed all the floating plants on the same day, as I sold them to a friend. Come to find out, my bio-filter was EXTREMELY weak because of it... The next feeding for the rays, I had a bad ammonia spike, and it killed my Jardini arowana. Rays were fine, though.

Just a heads up ;)

I have opened up my slum and put water plants on top. I doubt those few plants do enough to affect my biofilter though, as I feed my rays 1kg of seafood per day.

There is research on what kinds of plants absorb the most NO3, which is a ***** to remove, cos NO, plants were not created equeal.

I'll post what I know once I verify somethings.

On a seperate note, Miles were you in Singapore? I would have been your tourguide.

duck weed???? I've been plotting a new sump that would have duck weed and hyacynth...

Yup, duck weed ...also water lettuce (Pistia stratoides), anubias species are very good as well.

Good point on the biofilter condition Miles.
