I am setting up a amazon biotope with black rays, geophagus and discus. The hardest part is the setting up. Currently sourcing the wood and ordered plants but problem is planting them so the rays wont dig them up.

Anyone done this before with success? Any ideas would be great.

Everytime ive done it before with onion plants ive failed, this was just planting them in deep sand and putting big rocks around them. Within minutes the little buggers rip them out.

Cheers

The only thing I can think of is plants that attach to driftwood/rocks. Or have the plants in pots? Don't have any rays but I have some Manzanita with a thin layer of Java Moss growing on it (just set it up last week). My Discus like it :D

It's the one in my Avatar except I put more on it

The rays will find a way to uproot it no matter what you do. I can't even get mine to leave my filter intake alone LOL much less plants

I currently have pots in my tank and the rays haven't bothered uprooted them.

PS. What substrate are you planning to use?

I keep BD's Discus, and Geos in a planted tank and I've had great success from the beginning.

The plants are attached to driftwood and the driftwood is hung from the top by plastic zip ties (in my case an acrylic tank). This also opens up floor space for the rays and creates dark areas for the rays as well. The plants are not biotope appropriate, but I try to keep the rest of the fish in line with the natural habitat.

I use "stunner" LED's for lighting.

Here is the link to my tank:

Me too; Nice layout; I finally gave up on keeping my plants rooted in the substrate; my marbled motoro just trashes them; so now i've got them in four inch pots weighted down with rocks; Course this doesn't protect the plants from my Juruparis! They still go after the roots....

you can try your best and it might last a while but the rays will eventually chew everything up when they get bigger

i gave up on plants

I think everyones best bet is plants that dont need a Substrate... like Narrow Java Fern or Anubias (although 4 some reason there are a few fish that like to chew on Anubias).

I try to get plants that will grow on Rocks or Driftwood so Im sticking with Narrow Java Fern (I think thats what it is)

I am using the one in the back of the pic... so far so good :D
