I have used clay pipes before but you need to soak them for a few days in a bucket of water and test at the start, during and end to make sure the ph and hardness are not shifting due to something like lime content.
You can sometimes get aquatic mosses to take root on tubes if fastened with something safe like thin elastic bands as long as the rays do not chew them. My lfs uses fine fishing line or cotton to fasten moss and java fern to coconut shells and bog wood.
