RAYS IN ACRYLIC TANK

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok you guys are going off topic. i just want to know what kind of damage rays can do, to an acrylic tank.

Ok a ray CAN destroy an acrylic tank. Ive seen big rays chew the heads off some big tough fish so yes obviously it could. Is it likely to destroy your acrylic tank? Probably not. But if it hits over 2' disc diameter it may get mad being in a 2' wide tank and chew a hole in it

I had a 12" ray chew my 600 gallon pretty bad! Ask didysis he had to buff all the scratches out lol. you could hear a squeak everytime she bit! Only one Ray so she must have been nuts? I think your tank is too small. I asked the question how to get a ray to quit chewing on a tank 5 years ago. The answer I received on this forum was, if your worried about a ray scratching your tank then rays are not for you. My answer is its possible but not likely.

Even the most aggressive ray cannot chew through acrylic. Rays will however scratch it with their mouths. I have acrylic windows in my big tank and I have 2-3" long scratches in them that are about 1" wide. The scratches do not bother me but if you are setting up a show tank it might be an issue for you.

This is comming from someone with no expirience in ray keeping, but if the ray is wider than the tank, im guessing it might try and escape, i dont know if theyr that intelligent.
Normaly they wouldnt be able to chew trough, but maybe if they where trying to escape?
Anyways, your probaly just gonna end up with a pair of heavily stunted rays )

I hope someone is gonna confirm or correct me, as said, i just started my making my own "ray plan" with tank sizes, ray species and all that stuff :)

Good luck :) !

I don't think chewing all of the way through is a concern. I do think they can scratch the hell out of it.

Mighty magnets makes a sweet acrylic cleaner pad/magnet set. They have an acrylic scratch remover kit that removes scratches underwater without draining and then rinsing the tank like when using novus.

I have seen some things on this forum but never a ray wider than the tank lol

You stand as much chance of the ray chewing on the acrylic as you do of them chewing on the silicon bead
