I started up my U-V light yesterday & this morning my rays are all very lathargic & not eating for the first time EVER! I did a test & there is an ammonia spike. I am doing an 80% water change, but what else should I do? Unplug the U-V? Is it the cause of the issue?

I can't see how the uv could cause an ammonia spike but if that's the only change that has been made, it would have to be. I would leave it on and monitor closely throughout the weekend. In the end, the uv will do fare more good than harm.

My fish guy says the U-V only affects things that go past it. We did not have the U-V running before because we let the tank cycle & the bacteria colonies could grow. Now we are sterilizing them. The bacteria that maintain the ammonia level live on a surface area; like the filter, rocks & sand. So water changes & prime?

Well I did an 80% water change & turned the lights out. I'll go back after dinner & test the water again. Hopefully they will have perked up some!
