Rays on a budget- My (somewhat long) story w/pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry for your loss.

Not to be deterred... the new hatching tank is going now, and I had a long day catching up on some tank maintenance and such. Didn't get any pics today though.

I got to practice up my sewing skills this morning making a fry-catching basket out of some cross-stitch canvas. yippee...

I couldn't bring myself to bury the Leo. He's carefully packaged in some plastic bags, and I'll be looking for a qualified taxidermist. Don't know that it will be any more of a consolation to have that done...But ya just don't see enough Leo mounts...so if I can't stand to look at him that way, I'll donate him to a zoo or something.

Just put it in the freezer like the rest of us when we lose a wonderful fish. Eventually, you get tired of moving them when you need some bread or a frozen pizza and they end up in the trash. I've had 15-16" rhoms, 13" ternetzis, a few rays, and an army pike (old school!) in my freezer for extended stays.

Boy...I hope that doesn't happen.

I forgot to mention...he's already been in the freezer, carefully packaged of course.

I need to get some pics of the new hatching tank. I'll get those later tonight, or tomorrow. there are already several modifications that I can see are needed, but it is still working better that the tumblers ever did. I have a few eggs in there now, more will go in soon.

GREAT THREAD........from your ups and downs......... im lovin it!!
btw. sorry for your losses... but the upside is, that u havent given up on a dream that your making come true!

thats rough mike, my heart dropped when i read thet your leo died so i can only imagine what your growing through. Keep up the hard work and learn from your mistakes, just have to double check everything, and then triple check, im assuming itd be alot like doing maintanence on ur racer engine..... dont want something going wrong on the track. Just learn from it and keep up the good fight.

Taxidermy is an amazing art. I never considered all that would go into mounting a fish, especially a Ray...but I knew first off, that the eyes would need to be custom made.

I am very happy to say that I have found a very qualified artist that is eager to take on "Mr Leo". He even makes his own eyes. there wes a lot of awesome work I saw in the process of finding the right guy for the job. It came down to experience with exotics and eagerness to accept the job.
