Rays on a budget- My (somewhat long) story w/pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
with the tilapia you could use a chemical tank like we did in ag mech when i was in hs. just use a 5or800 gallon tank and cut a section out like the front top half quarter. that way you could use the back top half to hang some plumbing on. they grow fast in them and they work great. if you have an insulated garage a few of those and you will be set with tilapia and rays. you can get them at rural king or a any farm supply store will most likely carry them. they are just big round tanks and make sure you buy new as we put some nasty chems in them on the farm.

hows the talapia going very interested in a update please

The larger Tilapia are doing well, and getting healthier/getting some color. I'm going to keep them in QT through the end of the weekend and hit them with one more dose of Prazi and Binox after todays water change. I'm looking forward to getting them out of the 75g that they are in....It's way too crowded.

The fry are still as healthy as can be, and they seem to be growing. but it's hard to tell from day to day. But I'm sure they are, because yesterday I was thinking I could unwrap the piece of mesh from the filter inlet. When I first put them in there, it looked like they were small enough to get sucked in there.

I'm having trouble deciphering the fry feeding requirement of "constant". I don't have any type of autofeeder set up, so I just try to put a pinch of powder in there every time I think of it...so 6-8 times per day is what I've been managing. Thier little bellies seem to be filling out, so I "think" I'm keeping up. It's really cool seeing a hundred tiny fish darting around in a 150g...

I still have to go and get the 2nd 150g...I have it all lined up, except he's been busy, and I ran out of money... So I'll have to divide up the current 150g, and also use the 75g once the bigger ones are done with QT. At that point, I'll reduce their numbers a bit when I sex them- Which is another thing that's new to me. I've seen pictures...so I'll just hope I get it right. I think I want to keep 5 males and 15 females for now...and then see how the territorial behavior goes at that point...So I'll be culling almost half of them. I'll be doing the same with the fry when they get larger, but since they are healthy, the rays can eat them.

I'll update pics once QT is done. That tank is so dark from the meds that the colors don't show in pics. Some of them actually have some really nice blues going, and some have some really nice rosy-red cheeks. I think they are nice looking fish- I can't wait till the white ones get that big. They will be awesome.

Still have 2 shipments of rays coming. 2 coming in a week or 2, and 3 Leo pups coming when they get born. So, although things have slowed a bit, they are still progressing.

I scrounged up a few side jobs for the next week or 2. That's awesome...I still need another pice of pondliner, some boards, and some plumbing stuff to finish the second pool. Although there is "room" with what I have, I don't really want to go back to the 2x per day cleaning that it would require. But, I can if I have to, it's only work.

Thanks for following!

awesome job man keep up the good work

I have decided to part with the smaller Motoro pair 9"M 8"F. I'll sell the male separate, but not the female. They are great friends of mine already, but I'm fine-tuning my long term plans, and eventually I'm going to run out of room.

Thanks,

I offered them as either the male only, or both. I'd like to keep the female, but if someone wants the pair, then they can stay together.

I'll have 13 including these, but some of them are going to be pups. Eventually, I'll have as many as I can care for. I have room to build here as finances allow.

I took some pics of the small pair for the ad, but since I just found the slave flash and started using it, these turned out pretty nice, so I thought I'd post them here too.
