Rays on a budget- My (somewhat long) story w/pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's a good idea to put some tilapia in with your ray, kinda get her socialized so she doesn't get picked on when she gets into a community tank. Looking forward to seeing some great pics. I plan on taking some videos and pictures once I get my ray in the tank with my redtail. Im going to pick one up on sat. My gf is getting it for me for my birthday. I turn 20 on sunday

The Tilapia didn't stay in there long enough to get any pictures. :( I caught them picking at the baby and going after her tail. So now all that goes in there is fry for her to chase and catch. There's nothing in that tank for a ray to hide under, and there's nothing for the Tilapia to do either... so I probably just need some driftwood and fake plants or something...

Oh dang well that's no good, just wait till she gets bigger and starts chasing them around

Thanks for the support. I gotta admiit, I've been on a little 'down-cycle' lately. I was doing so good when there were construction projects going on, and things were moving at a rapid pace. Lately, I'm in a 'wait' mode...not so exciting. Waiting for this, waiting for that...waiting for fish to grow, rays to be born...

I'm still buying a tank here and there off craigslist, a filter here and there...But I really need to set up 15 more tanks all at once in the center of my room so I can efficiently combine the heating/filtration. So as I buy these individual tanks, I'm making room for them still around the outside of the room.

I know the whole sit and wait situation, I've been waiting for three months to get my first ray, it sucks. Have you thought about doing a tubberware set up, I've seen lots of people who breed convicts in tubberware containers

You should wait a bit longer and you can get your first ray from me.:headbang2

I'll sell the female I have fairly soon, and I have another litter coming any day now...She's at around 110 days right now.

The tub thing was a consideration, but I really need to be able to accurately tell when the mothers have eggs so that I can strip them at the proper time. If I strip them too soon, they have no immunity resistance (fungus), and if I wait too long, It takes several weeks for the females to regain their strength since they don't eat while carrying eggs.

The 2 larger motoros have birthed 4 and 5...although a couple were stillborn the first time around for the mother that is about to birth...however, she is bigger this time, so I am expecting a better outcome. The Smaller 'Royal Motoro' had her first birth for me...and she had only one. She's also pregnant again, so we'll see.

$$$ depends on what this batch turns out like, although none will be too expensive. Just that there are 2 possible fathers for the next 2 that will give birth. I tried to keep them separated, but there are a couple of inexperienced males here that needed the competition of the motoro male to get into the breeding game.
