Rays + sand or Bare Bottom?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Check out lincolngoh's substrate. No idea where he got it, but those small granule balls look so damn awesome. These tiny balls are light enough for rays to bury in and heavy enough not to get kicked up. I really would start using substrate if i could find the stuff he has.

i tried to find out also but couldnt find it in the u.s.

I've been looking at getting some new substrate for awhile now. I used to do sugar sand but ended up being too fine and would stick to their slimy coating and drive my rays crazy at least thats what I thought. That only lasted about a week because thats how long it took me to get it all out. Ive done just normal sand you can find anywhere that I had cleaned out in fresh water a long time ago and it looked really good(natural) but it sometimes left the tank seem dirty without frequent water changes. But now Im looking for something heavier that wont stick to my rays or get thrown up into the overflows when the bigger rays stir it up. SO I have been debating on CaribSea African Cichlid Mix or Caribsea Eco Complete I think that black would look awesome with rays. But the Cichlid mix would be a more natural look. Let me know your thoughts. Looking at buying a bunch soon to fill up my tank.

im looking into caribseas- crystal river, torpedo beach, or peace river

I think the peace river is the smallest grain, 1-2mm.

Hi,
I'm also trying to figure out the best substrate. I was using reef sand but it is somewhat difficult to clean. Since I only had my tank partially filled with it tried a bag of torpedo beach and peace river. The torpedo beach is has grains downto sand size but also some that are bigger(1.2mm). My retic can bury in it so that is nice but since it have also have some reef snd I noticed the torpedo beach is thinning out. The peace river is a very small gravel. While my ray will swim over it and I noticed nobelly iritation, he seems to favor the sandy bottoms. Since I just made these changes it is early. Going to see how they hold up under cleaning. Right now the torpedo beach is looking like a nice balance if I changed entirely over to it.

peace river is a little bigger but i like the look of the torpedo better. i think im gonna get a bag and try it in one of my smaller tanks

Please let me know how it turns out. I've been bare bottom from day one. I would'nt mind trying something that wont cloud the tank or have some of the issues you all have been talking about. Just always went bare so i keep the tank at its best.
