rays with catfish???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is a good thread, I'm interested to hear about more people's experiences with this. I currently have a 12" TSN with two 10" rays in my new 450g. This is only temporary until the pond is dug this winter. Then the TSN goes in the pond...hopefully with an rtc and a niger.

I'm not too worried at the moment though, everyone seems ok, but they've only been together for a day.

It's NOT that it's impossible.

You just need to think about how many pounds of food you will have to feed to insure the ray/s get full. You may very well have to plug up the cat with a whole pound of food before the ray/s even get to touch any. Rays must chew thier food, it takes them longer to eat then it takes a cat to inhale.

If you're ok with feeding a few pounds of food per feeding then rock on..... Do it, everything may work. But if you have a similar food budget of most of us mere mortals it probobly will be too expensive to be justifyable.

And he wont have to be near as big as you think he'd have to be to do this. These cats can pull off the impossible when it comes to eating.

agreed i had a 8"ish rtc eat a 6"ish retic ray

then i lost the rtc about 5 week later

and the more you feed the rtc the faster and bigger it will grow....short term will probly work but watch very closly

ive got my rays with a Tigrinus and all seems fine...I'm not sure about keeping RTC's though

Big difference between beak/bill having Tigs and TSNs, and the super wide mouth having RTCs.

All you can do is try, but I think there's plenty of warning overtones in this thread.

I try combos of fish that shouldn't work, you never know if it's gonna till you try. I'm sure the guy that mixed his GATF and Armatus heard plenty of warnings but we've seen the pics.

Well right now, the TSN has a full belly for 3 days on about 5 pieces of shrimp/tilapia, so its fairly easy. Haha. My female ray ate a chopped up earthworm tonight. I haven't seen the male eat yet. They'll both get another round of worms in the morning. Then my plan is to start mixing the worms with shrimp and tilapia to try to get them on that.

I agree about the bill type mouth of the shovelnose cats, big difference between those and the mouths on rtc's.

hey thanks for all of you for tell me some of your experience, and now I think that put rays with RTC is not a good idea, but may be the tigrinus it´s a better option.
what do you think about that?

ive heard cases of a catfish snacking on rays but i have no experince on it :)
