I have been thinking about getting a motoro. I currently have a 125. At what size have they out grown an 18 inch wide tank? What to try and figure out how much time I would have until an upgrade would be needed. I also noticed that the smallest rays stores get in are the "teacups" I know they get big. What type of ray are they normally? I have seen some pretty nice looking ones lately.

"Teacups" are usually retics but really it could be anything, if you want an ID of whats in the store take a picture and post it here.

A motoro pup in a 125 would be ok for no more than 6 months in my opinion, and you would need to be doing regular water changes and have allot of filtration. If your not prepared to upgrade to a minimum of a 4ft x 6ft tank at some point in the future then you shouldn't get a motoro.

I am familiar with the care and thats not an issue. I have great filtration and do a lot of water changes regardless. The issue would be upgrading the tank won't happen for another year. Didn't realize motoros grew so quickly. Any that are slower growers that I could accommodate comfortably for a year in a 125g.

Stingrays i found if you put in the good effort and great water changes 125 would suit good for a couple of years. They grow pretty darn fast. If you get a 125 gallon though it mostly matters foot size. if you have a 125 but really wide then it could live longer in there but the bigger the ray grows the more waterchanges you would have to do. Teacups are generally retics

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately its a standard 125 and only 18 inches wide.

I wanted a ray for a long time before I got the 315 (7x3 footprint) ....If you want to do something, do it right (get a proper size setup first).

I would recommend getting a hystrix or rectic like John said they seem to stay the smallest and should last a year in a 125...

Also what are peoples feelings about polypterus and rays in the same tank?

Be careful of what you think is excellent filtration, these things produce vast amounts of ammonia. I only mention this is many people quote excellent filtration that turns out to be a hang on the back and 1 external filter then run in to troubles. To give you an idea I have a 30gal drip, a 100 gal plus sump and an external and I still do weekly water changes to keep the nitrate in check. I have virtually zero nitrate out of the tap. Sorry if you have everything in hand but keen to help.
