RB care sheet question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fine I admitt it didn't listen to your guys. But if I would take 3 out when they get a bit bigger would the other one be paranoid for life? Then if I end uptotally takin them all out what other oddball could I put in there?

i wouldn't consider piranhas oddballs, especially red bellies...but to answer your questions.

i wouldn't recommend a solo red belly piranha, you'll get bored, fast. you'll never be able to put anything else with it except for to try to reintroduce it to a shoal later. no gurantee that'll work either as it'll be use to being by it's self. maybe it'll keep your attention while it's still growing, but 8 months down the road, once it's growth isn't noticeable, you'll start to lose interest.

Some people have already recommended some of the smaller piranhas that have to be kept solo? Someone also suggested exodons? here's a video, this is probably what you think piranhas will act like anyways

pygocentrus nattereri is a shoaling fish, actually a better way to put it would be pygocentrus nattereri (in fact this applies to all pygocentrus species) prefer swimming in groups. this makes them more secure, safety in numbers as there are many fish/non fish predators in the amazon pray on piranhas. and it's more efficient for them to hunt down food. can you keep just one? of course, but you won't know how that one fish will react being in your 36g. it could be one mean ass fish or could stay at the corning all day long. if you plan to keep just one fish, you should start with a serra. sanchezi. it will fit in your 36g for live.
as for getting a bigger tank and filter, you can always check craigslist or MFK's market place if you don't mind used ones. price of the tank setup depends on your location. my old 75g I paid $200, comes with tank, glass hood, 48" dual T5 fixture, DIY stand and one FX5 with medias. just have to look around, there are deals out there.

Ok thanks jp and balli, prob not gonna get a new tank and the sanchezi, how much are those, and do you think they are redily available to a normal lfs?

What other odballs could I put in there, any oddball that is not like $80+.

sanchezi in lfs, probably not but it really depends on where you live. you could call around and see what they're willing to order you. i don't know what forum you'd find exodons under on mfk. i know with your tank size you can probably fit 8-12 though with proper filtration. yes, i'd still recommend that you upgrade whatever came with your tank

exodon is under other characins section. I saw that you found it already.
