Hey all,

I'm fairly new to the forum, but I've had my 3 RB's for almost a year now without incident. Recently, my eldest' head just turned much darker than the rest of his body. He literally looks like he was dipped in vat of black ink all the way to the ends of his gills in a perfectly straight line. I've been trying to do some research on this matter and have come up with nothing. One thing that I was able to find was that it could be genetics? I wouldn't have worried if he didn't begin to act strangely. He hasn't left the same spot in my tank for a few days. I'm not sure if he's eating or not, but other than just sitting there he's absolutely fine. He isn't laboring to pass water over his gills or anything but I normally see him swimming around with the others and he's not doing that anymore.

For starters, I have a 55 gallon tank. The water parameters are: 20ppm Nitrate. 0 ppm Nitrite. 7.5ph. Carbonate Hardness 240ppm. General hardness 15ppm. It is somewhat of a planted aquarium. I have a bubbler and power head to keep the water moving and oxygenated. In addition to the 3 RB's there is about 20-30 guppies living in the tank that I initially got as feeders, but instead became tankmates. They've bread from the 5 I initially bought almost a year ago. I also have a slew of snails living in the tank as well. The RB's current diet is strictly freeze dried krill and frozen scallops. They've never been fed goldfish and haven't eaten on of the guppies I put in. I do 25-35% water changes every 7-14 days.

Hope you guys can help,

B

That is odd. When did this happen? Has it been a gradual change? How do the other natts look? How big are they? Have you changed anything in the tank? Both colors would look normal independantly, but I have never seen them together like that.

As pygos grow they sometimes become less active and claim territories in the tank, so that could explain why it doesn't move much. I would drop the krill out of the diet and bring in fish fillets and shrimp.

I've had them since September of last year. They're all about 4.5" long. This literally happened over a weekend that I left them alone for. I did a major water change about 3 weeks ago and another smaller at the beginning of this week. As far as changes go, the only "major" change I did was I moved the tank into another room but that was it, the water chemistry remained the same. That occurred when I did the major water change. A bit of good news, he's moved around a bit more today and is no longer remaining in that same spot.

Drop out the krill? I guess I can do that. I have beef liver sitting in my fridge I've yet to feed them, is that alright? They seem to really like the scallops over anything I've fed them to date. I've also given them steak and chicken, which they've eaten before as well. I'm trying to find a food that will really trigger their growth and color. I understand that being in captivity will hinder some of their natural coloration, but I've seen decent coloring out of captive piranha in other tanks.

Thanks for all the help,
B

Chicken and steak are a no no, bad for your water. Try fresh fish fillets frozen or not, i use talapia and raw shrimps supplemented with o1 pellets and beef heart!

I feed everyother day a rotation of talapia and shrimp, keep em in the freezer and thaw them in hot water for 5 min, be careful with shrimp cuz they will fight so throw in a couple pieces so they dont all jet for the same piece and accidently bite eachother

You should mention that beef heart is a no no as well, since you mentioned chicken and steak... Just saying...
