Yeah it sucks to lose juvies like that when you are attempting to pair something up. Even with 5 you could still get lucky.
An update on this.....not much to updateIt's a long slow wait. I have 5 of these living in the 540 still. They are obnoxious. They are violent. They make life in this tank very difficult for all fish in their size range (4-6 inches). Larger fish they ignore completely.
No sign of any breeding behavior at all. No way to tell which are male and which are female.
Here's a video update--same video I linked in the other thread.
Is that a female barred midas in the tank?
I think it was a great move putting them in the 540, mine always killed each other in 150 to 240gal tanks.
Although I had one pair spawn in a 150, within 24 hours of spawning the female was dead, and eggs gone.
In hind sight, I should have removed the male as soon as the eggs were fertilized.
Yep. It's a female, I have a bunch of her fry living in my sump. She's a wild caught "Red Barred Midas" from San Francisco Libre Managua. I had a captive bred male Midas that bred with her several times, I got rid of him because I was just tired of all the fry all the time. They bred constantly.
I hear that. If any of these start looking like pairing off, I'm gonna pull em and put em in their own tank with a divider. I have 2 male and 1 female Trimac right now, same thing. First sign of spawning, divider.
