Very intresting discussion Jason. I beleive it could be possible, but I doubt it will be easy. Piebalds seem to just stop mid peeling. Even Midas like mine and Modest_man's retain some coloration from their natural barred form. Be intrestng to see if you could. Perhaps if you ordered some Barred and bred then you would get lucky.

As far as breeding, I am sure it would depend on the fish aswell as size.
I would say like most Amphilophus it is around the 7-9Month mark and 5-6" in length. It Takes about 2-3 Months for Amphilophus fry to reach 1" and really start taking off in growth
. Then averaging Half an inch to an inch per month is where I get the age. Midas, Trimacs, and Red Devils have all started showing intrest in breeding and have produced fry as far as my Midas and Trimac pairs have gone around 5". The Trimac pair the female was around 4" when she started showing intrest, around 5" when they finally did. My current Midas pair were 5".

Modest_Man, nice links. I think I may throw them on our Amphilophus Facebook page.

See, now that's what I was expecting...but like I said..I got mine from Rapps at the end of last February at about 2". The male in my avatar is probably 10" SL by now and the female about 5" SL. They dig pits all the time and clean flattened surfaces but no spawn yet.

I've talked to a couple of others who got them around the same time to see if mine were an aberration but they experienced the same. I also asked Rapps after I'd enquired about possibly getting a couple more females from him and he also said that xiloaensis and saggitae took a little longer to mature. He said his were in no hurry to breed.

Just something for potential future hobbyists interested in these 2 species should keep in mind. That should in no way dissuade anyone from keeping them as they are wonderful cichlids. :D

Right now I'm torn as to what I want my next Amphilophus to be...I'd like to eventually have all of them but I think my next will probably be zaliosum. :)

The midas complex color changes don't follow simple Mendelian genetics so predicting what could happen is beyond me.

There are a lot of old scientific journals on midas' out there that deal with their polychromatism which might help you out.

Thank you for the links :) I always enjoy reading about the red devil complex. :)

Definently not, I had a pair of petsmart Midas that didn't ever breed, but always threatening to. from 4" to 10" on the male and 4" to 7" on the female. They will breed soon though I am sure, might just be the tank set up which I might be abled to help on if you will take my word on it.

As for Zal's, they are an awsome fish with nasty teeth. I miss my old male. F1 from Rapps

I would like a piar of Chancho one day. Def on my fish bucket list. Right now I'm content with my current stock. My Trimac fry a 1.5 months are at 5/8" to 3/4" and growing fast, I just moved them from Daphnia to Brine shrimp and I see visable growth every day. My little Midas is gobbling up massivour and meal worms and is starting to show sings of filling out and putting on some size. I have enough to keep me busy, but if another 180 came by you never know. Those Xilos are awsome fish too, so many fish so little space!

Trimacs and Chancho are next on my list for sure. I really miss keeping Trimacs though, great fish.:naughty:
