Hi all,do all Rd/Midas juvies have solid coloration before they morph into those nice red /orange /whites we see in older specimens. At my lfs all the 2 inchers have a kind of solid orange dark color to them. Also could somebody explain what peeling and fading is,sorry for the newb question.

All cichlid fry have mottled and striping patterns to maximise their survival rate in the wild, a bright orange fry would be eaten very quickly, so once they get around 2-4" depending on the fish they colour up depends on individuals, aggression and sex.

fading is when the fish changes from a dark dull colour to an orange white or red base, this happens with a bunch of different cichlids especially red devils, fading can happen quite late too depending on the fish.

Pink convict fry are white and dont fade :D

Anyway, Like Elakoon said, All cichlids will go through a phase where they "color up". Peeling and Fading is almost always refered to when talking about midas or red devil based fish. They turn mostly black and then the black looks like it peels off to reveal the adult white to red base color.

Hope you understand now :) and FishingOut, isnt that due to the Leucisism ?

Yup, Leucism, Which does happen in nature, Just extremely rare.
African fry will have color, And I breed Koi Angelfish and all the fry were orange.
Most cichlid fry will look like brown/grey little minnows to help camoflauge them in the wild, But there are some exceptions.

They will go through multiple stages of peeling as they grow. Its just them going from juvenile stage to adults. The coloration will differ from fish to fish. You'll also get a little difference in coloration in the the end that are based on the source of your RD or Midas. Petsmart and Petco, which actually sell hybrids of both of these fish, will be different from RD or Midas that are genuine. I like them both. Peeling is a natural process of these cichlids that is pretty cool to watch.

I've seen quite a few on this site that have lost their color and turned mostly white. All the ones that I have had peeled until they were a solid orange or dark orange. You should check some of the RD/Midas threads to see all the different color patterns. None of them look exactly the same.
