You were defending the impulsive buyer on the arapaima thread not so long back. I'm sure you've tried to tell me not to have an opinion on people keeping fish in tiny tanks in the past too.

No emotions here. Quite calm and grounded thank you.
Are you sure about that ? This is the banning large fish thread right ? I dont remember it that way.

Either way your not wrong about your opinion, just surprised you went with the name calling too. We disagree on philosophy sure, not on general care.

Well this thread went longer than I expected, once Frank rode in on his white horse.
Ahh your awake. Yay lets make MFK clean again.

Ulu, there is a difference between the type of consumer that impulse buys an Oscar for their 55 gallon, and a consumer that takes the time to plan out their future set up, sometimes for a year or two in advance. Impulse buying doesn't give anyone a free pass, at least not to me. The WWW offers all one needs for those that want to spend some time researching, prior to their purchase. I spent close to year, just on the rock scape for one of my tanks in the past. Waiting for spring thaw was part of that planning, but I waited.

In your case I'm glad to see that your impulse buy has future plans. What struck a cord with me was the OP stating ;

I've seen it work before and it will work in most cases unless you have a very large oscar. I've seen them upwards of 18 inches, but I had one in a 55 and he hit 14 inches and was fine, it wasn't ideal, but it still did work. That's why I said a 55 gallon will work, but a 90 would be perfect. A lot of sources say 55 is minimum, though I would say 75

Suggesting that an adult O should be (I know they can be) kept long term in a 55 gallon is just plain bad advice.
We might as well revert back to 2005 MFK, where kids ran about giving piss poor advice about minimum tank sizes. I personally don't even like the term, minimum tank size. It suggests that we do the minimum in keeping our fish.

Im not defending the argument in keeping an oscar in a 55 gal.

In your mind you probably truly believe that, yet had you read the OP's comments carefully (all of them, not just the ones that you wanted to see) that's pretty much what you did. The OP said; I've seen it work before and it will work in most cases unless you have a very large oscar. He then went on to describe how he kept one that was 14", in a 55 gallon.

No one was stoning him, or driving pitch forks in him (did you study drama at school?) but some of us were saying, no, that won't work well, long term. I referred to his comment as idiotic (gasp), which I stand by. IMHO it is idiotic to even suggest that a 55 gallon is in ANY way suitable for a 14" adult O. In my opinion.

I also said;

I don't hate anyone, but I have disagreed with Rachel in the past. Keeping a 14" cichlid in a 55 gallon is ridiculous, I don't care how many people have done it. I've seen adult red devils in 30 gallon tanks, those idjits probably thought that worked as well.
Certainly. Had you been a member here 10 yrs ago you probably would have found more support for your personal fish keeping philosophy. Not with me, but with some of the younger fish keepers that hung around here back then. Nowadays I think that the vast majority here are more informed, more experienced, better educated, and not overly keen of the JDM ways of the world. Today I think the only real support that you're going to find with regards to keeping a 14" cichlid in 50 gallons of water is with the ass clowns of the forum.

No stoning, no pitchforking, and no drama, up until that point.

Frank, let me take a moment and apologize sincerely if at any time in this discussion, or in the past, I hurt your feelings. I guess I always thought that the toughest man in America could take it.
Lol
