Well in my 20 gallon, my convict pair is at it again! It seems after the fry is able to fend for themselves, the parents let them go their separate ways. Yesterday, my female was (I don’t want to say “chasing”, as that sounds violent) escorting the fry away from the nest. So I removed all 3 of the fry and placed them in my 6.6 gallon bookshelf aquarium with my betta.

They seem to thrive in there, as at first my betta chased them, but they are too quick for him; he just gave up. He doesn’t seem to bother them at all anymore.

These fry are 24 days old.

With convicts you will have plenty of them. You may want to consider a grow out tank.

lol cross your fire mouth with them. I think the hybrid is sweet. I just wouldn't let them out of your tank into the hobby.

love hybrids, just as long as they stay in the home they were bred in. hows the fry

Yea hybrids are cool, but like I said, I don't currently have room, and I don't know if my firemouth would breed with my female con, as there is almost a 2 inch difference between the 2! I saved 3 of the con fry as I promised friends 2, and I wanted 1 to save for when I upgrade to a larger tank in the future.

Interesting observation. I was cleaning the algae off of the side of my tank, and a thought occurred to me. I decided to get a net and play around to test the mettle of the CAE and rainbow shark. I chased them with the net, but they were both catastrophically afraid of venturing over to the convicts' side of the tank. The shark would rather be netted then to be forced to put up with a con onslaught! The CAE was a bit braver, when I touched him with the net, he darted over, but both of my cons did a number on him. My male con just stared at the net, making sure I wasn't getting anywhere near his fry; he stood still like a statue, as if he was telling the CAE with his eyes and mere presence NOT to go over to his side of the tank!

Just this morning, I woke up to a dead Betta. I think he had bloat, as his stomach was distended, and I haven't seen him eat at all lately. But then again, 1 of the over a month old convict fry has been nipping at his fins and harassing him.

Just some updates on my ‘vict fry. They are a little over a month old:

I feed them a variety of food, but I do have to cut it up with a pill cutter like 3 times! I also change 50% of the water about 3 times a week.
