When you are new to salt, my advice is bigger is always better. Nano tanks are neat, and can be just as cool as a big tank, but there is hardly any room for error as with a big tank, plus you limit yourself to very small fish and inverts. A 29g or a 37g would be as small as I would recomend in the beginning and that really is too small, like I said bigger is better. But it can be done, here is a 37g tall tank (same dimensions as a 29g but 3 inches taller)

Another thing to do to save money is check the paper and you local forums/clubs for used equipment. People are always upgrading and or have boxes of stuff in the closet that they dont use and would sell to you to get you started.

As for Canadian suppliers, I dont know, I do know Marine Depot and Premium Aquatics ship to Canada. I know there are a few tank manufactures up there, but their names elude me.

Like he said bigger is better. I would personaly suggest a 55g as minimum. As far as initial start up cost goes, you need to evaluate what you plan to keep. Likewise, you will need a protein skimmer, a number of power heads for flow (very important you will see with your reading), maybe a filter (not necessary), some sort of substrate and maybe live rock, not to mention the tank and stand. Best book out there for beginner's is The New Marine Aquarist by Robert Fenner. Bob is probably one of the most knowledgeable person out there.

Wow thanks guys that is alot to digest maybe i might have to keep appreciating them from afar living vicariously through you guys on here for a while longer. The startup cost really is nothing to scoff at, so for now ill just try to piece together what i can from garage sales and the like. I know shopping around is the name of the game but what are some reference prices for the hardware. I just need a ball park figure. I just to want to get taken to the cleaners.
cheers
