Re-seeding some dead biomedia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put 20 times the normal amount of dechlorinator (the cheaper stuff, not Prime) and three days later it still smells like a public pool. Makes me worry that all the little crevices in the media are going to cling to bleach forever. Circulation is coming from the FX5 and an AC110 running on the 30g tank.

No big deal, I guess, as I can just go ahead and use some other media and let this stuff sit and air out some more (except actually in air, rather than jammed into buckets like before). But I'm a little surprised. I figured it'd be fine by now.

You go through all that trouble and cheap out at the end???
And you were doing all this fretting because your going Discus...
Dude.......

Just spread the media out and let the air take care of it.

I put a molly in there to test things out. He was fine when it was just the tank and the filters, but when I added in the media, which I had spread out and aired out outside for 5 days, he died 24 hours later. Even with tons and tons of dechlorinator added with the media.

So that's not encouraging. I would prefer not to have to throw all this media out, but even if I do, I feel like now I've got to start over and bleach the filters and tank again.

Damn.

I haven`t a clue as to why you are having all this trouble.
Bleach has been part of my cleaning routine for as long as I can remember.
Not a single incident in all this time.
Often I "rush" a bleach bathed chunk of media back into service with a Prime laced bath.
Not a problem.

Yeah, it makes me wonder if it's just a bad coincidence. It was a small fish and there was probably over 1500 GPH getting rushed through that small (29g) tank, so maybe it just got exhausted to death or something. I might try again. Honestly, if it still had a ton of bleach in there I'd be really surprised, plus the fish wouldn't have lasted 36 hours.

Another fish murdered after 3 days being fine in there. Without the FX5 or its media even on there anymore.

The tank is cursed. It's going in the garbage.
