Re-siliconing 125g glass tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Is it a 4ft base or 6ft. The only reason i ask is you could fill it in the bath tub if it fits.

Its a 6x1.5x2, so it won't fit in the tub. Good idea though:)

I thought about just spreading a huge piece of plastic out under it and raising the edges up to make a sort of bowl under the tank, but 125g is a LOT of water to try to contain indoors.

Its currently snowing, and sticking, so I may have to wait a couple of days till it warms up to move it outside and fill it. One of my friends has a tire business not far from here, maybe I'll see if I can set it up in one of there garages for a few days to test-fill it.

I used ge type I like you on a 70 gallon recently, did not go super thick, and it's leak free and has a nice seal. I masked everything in although, then I siliconed it all in, smoothed it out and peeled the tape.
The camera flash makes it look white, i'm actually really happy with the clarity of it, as its nice and clear, sorry glass is dirty, pic while I was working on things...

i read some whare that silicon over 1/4 of an inch thick wont cure

It should still cure, it just takes a little while longer. I think mine is pretty much cured already. It's firm to the touch everywhere I tried. There's nowhere that is more than about 3/8 of an inch thick, I don't think.

there's an inch of snow on the ground today, so I'll be waiting a little while to fill the darn thing:headshake

i usde a kiddie pool when i lived in an apt.

I thought about that earlier today, actually, but I'm not sure anyone around here is carrying them, since its the middle of winter. I'll have to check at walmart or kmart to see what they have tomorrow.

I checked the silicone after work today, and its 100% fully cured. There's almost no smell at all, and every inch of it is very firm to the touch, with no soft spots. Hopefully I did a good enough job that it'll hold for good.

well, I had a friend help me move the tank outside, set it on some concrete blocks, and filled it up. I've got 3 heaters in there, probably only about 200w total, but they just need to keep it warmer than freezing. I also have 2 airstones running pretty strong to keep the surface turbulent to help prevent freezing. It should be in the upper 30's to low 40's for the next couple of days, so I won't have to worry about it.

So far no leaks, and its been full for about 30 minutes. I'll post again in the morning to see if it held up overnight.

the cold temp will just slow the curing process, I would let it sit 72 hours before test filling. In theory, if the water is moving and your not gonna be dipping into single digits, you should'nt have a freezing issue

The tank has been sitting curing since last saturday, so it should be fully cured. It wasn't soft or tacky to the touch, very firm and unyielding. So far this morning the tank hasn't leaked a drop! Hopefully it is the same when I get home from work...

If the tank holds water til tomorrow morning, I'll be spending tomorrow building a stand for it, and then tomorrow evening and sunday staining and sealing it. Then once the stand is done, I'll be emptying the tank and bringing it in to put on the stand! Hopefully that will be monday evening after work, but we'll see.
