First a little background. I was unable to procure a 180 due to Aqueon's current issues. There were literally no 180's in the pipeline in my area (drilled or not) & was advised it could be up to 6 months or longer to get one. So I decided to go with a 125 drilled tank which is available.

I currently have a harem of Gymnogeophagus balzanii in a 90 gallon setup for breeding them in my living room near the front door (not ideal I know but space was limited) where foot traffic is higher. The Gymnos are a skittish bunch & we literally stopped using the front door which is not a big deal as we prefer using the side garage door anyhoo. As soon as we did they all spawned.

The new 125 will be going in my evolving fish room which has a lot less foot traffic.
Here's my thought as have been having a difficult time deciding what to do with the 125:
Thinking of moving the G. balzanii to the 125 once it is completely cycled. The 125 is 2 inches less in height; balzanii like the bottom anyway. I believe they will be much more comfortable in the 125 in the fish room in lieu of the living room. I could either expand the number of female balzanii's and/or incorporate another Gymnogeo species in along with them in that 6 foot tank. Would love an additional Gymno species in there that would be compatible.

Now the question becomes what to do with the 90 in the living room. Need some fish for that tank that can handle some activity around their tank. I do have 6 Rainbow Cichlids that might appreciate an upgrade from their 40 breeder. But what to go with them?

Or...what might be a nice community tank (yes cichlids) CA or SA that interact better & can handle some activity?

Or... is this that wet pet moment that does not get too big for a 90???
Could really use some ideas & advice.

I think the balzanii in the 125 would be sweet!
I'd look to add a small group of pikes from the saxatilis group- i believe there are some from the same waters. the different body shape and trophic niche should help make that possible.

I would also get a group of deeper bodies tetra for the top- it would be hard to get geographically correct but I've always liked red/blue Columbia, buenos aires and black skirts. a group of 20-30 with two groups of cichlids would be fun and active.

for the 90- i'm a sucker for GT's or carpintis as a wet pet in 75/90's

You could add swordtails and the rainbow cichlids to the 90.

Swordtails are already in the 90 breeding like crazy. Rainbows would be an easy addition but I'm thinking it would also need something else. Otherwise it might be a somewhat empty 90.

Could do rainbowfish for the 341 liter. I have no experience with them as they are not my cup of tea, but they may fill the bill for your taste.

I agree about the multispinnossa, a 40 breeder for 6, is a bit cramped.
I put 6 pair in a 400 gal kiddy pool, and they did very well.
Buenos Aires tetras are pretty easy to source, and geographically appropriate.

I don't know if he has any, but Ken Davis(MFK member) may be a good source for Uruguayan Crenicichla, because of his regular collecting trips there..
I got my Uruguayan C.saxatillus from him. (I'd also check if he had Uruguayan tetras)

Uruguayan Crenicichla would be compatible with the G. balzanii & still allow them to breed?
