No one is breeding blacks....... I'm glad I started out with a shoal before I got a mystery Serra! Way better understanding with long term nutrition/habbitat/husbandry!

Good words jp!

And to get six 6 inch red bellies will cost you 6 months and 30-60 bucks total if you aren't silly enough to seek 6 inchers. way way cheaper cuz at that size you'll grow it out yourself.

Most people want something more exotic then the basic black rhom unless its big anyways (such as the 18 inch, $800 beast for sell on here right now)

I agree with JP, it makes more sense to start with reds and then branch out. Great reasons listed

all in all, at last, this is about a price problem. but caring, feeding is all the same. You are afraid to lose the serra coz it is expensive, not afraid to lose pygo coz it is cheap.
I have both of them and i dont see serra deserves more credits than pygo. both are same.

Doesn't matter the price. Their pets man..... and if you started out a different hobby say reptiles, would you buy one of the most difficult species or would you start with something practical to get a grasp on the knowledge it takes to keep these creatures NOT only alive but healthy and flourishing? Just saying when starting any hobby we usually don't start with a Ferrari!

Blacks are more rare, they do NOT breed in aquariums, they have serious compatibility issues and like jp pointed out unless you have experience with piranhas you will likely find one solo black in a tank hiding boring. As I stated before juvy blacks are much more sensitive to change, they are literally plucked out of the wild and thrown into a box, shipped cross continents where they reside in crappy pet store aquariums, then we put them in our tanks. Believe me I lost my first baby black and it hurt, they are frail at dime size and often times die. http://monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=507465

So if you don't get the point there isn't one to make....

as you said, it is true that they are rare, expensive and difficult to keep + bla bla bla. But i have both of them. For me keeping the rhom is nothing special than rbp shoal. I actually spent more money for rbp setup than the rhom's. if u compare the rhom keeping with goliath african tiger fish, rhom keeping is a very simple plan. If rhom keeping for advanced users, you have to keep several rhoms, at least 5 for several years before you buy a goliath african tiger fish.

my 2 GATF imported from Burundi and believe me, they are way too difficult than the rhom. rbp and rhom nearly the same for me. Maybe for someone else, rhom keeping is difficult.

PS - actually more RBPs are dying than rhoms. many people start RBP shoal with around 10 RBP's and several die after few months coz of cannibalism mainly. but most people don't care it because they are cheaper. people speak much about the death of rhom because it is expensive.

oh heck yeah man i agree the care is the same. i think the keyword missing here is most people consider red belly BEGINNER PIRANHAS, not beginner fish. that's a whole different subject. i agree with you care is no different, behavior is slightly different but if you can handle one, i believe you can handle the other. we just disagree on what someone new to piranhas should begin with

well, i also disagree with some of the "facts" from your original post but that's not all that important
