Yeah I appllaude you dumping boyfriend. Any significant other that would hate someones hobby whatever it may be should be kicked to the damn curb. They are not worth it,
I have loved the hobby since I was a kid. But by the time I was thirty, I came to the conclusion that keeping fish in glass boxes was a fundamentally immoral act. So, when a heater malfunctioned and boiled my last remaining tank, I quit the hobby for ten years.
A couple of months ago, I accidentally stumbled on to MFK. Looking at the photos and reading all the fish nerd discussions made me want a tank again. But what about the ethical problems? I found a solution.
Find an LFS that takes fish from people who don't want them or who didn't realize what they were getting into. Adopt one. Instead of imprisoning a fish for your own amusement, you are now rescuing a fish from an uncertain and bleak future. You get a fish to enjoy and the fish gets a life. Everybody wins.
I am pretty sure that had that tiny fry been left in the lake she would have been eaten by something. The store where I got her got a huge tank, about 200 I would say. Some of the remaining fry never really grew and some did. They totally over feed to prevent territory issues and the fish are obese. Literally. Gross. I also was promised to be able to set up my 55 gallon but then told not to...so that was another factor.
My LFS is pet smart. They do not take in fish unless they are returned within a certain amount of days. There are some other LFS's around here but I am just not into checking them out much.
We will see how my betta does...if he does well I may try setting up the 20 gallon again...maybe....
