Real, Fake, or just WTF?

Heard rumors about that in a river a couple hours south of where I live, extra eyes, mouths, fins, missing features, etc. That was several years back, apparently there was a serious pollution problem from industrial runoff... Always meant to go down there and see what I could fish up, but never got the chance...
