I wouldn't want to go with anything under 2' wide (if I could get an endli that is). Question for all those who are saying they only get to 16-18"; how long have you actually kept them for? Polys are long lived fish, and even though their growth rate will slow rapidly after the first few years, they should keep on growing through their adult life.
IMO a 5x2 footprint would be much better than a 6x18", more floor area and turning space. And of course tanks that are taller than they are wide are a complete waste of time for bichirs...
