Really need plecos in tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It depends on what type. The smaller kinds eat algae but the commons are just poop machines when they grow up.

Depends on what type of pleco you get. I have a BN pleco, they only grow to about 4 inches, they clean algae, steal food that drops to the bottom, loves zucchini and pieces of oranges.

That looks like a common - they grow pretty big & poop like a herd of cows.

This was my male BN pleco Damien (he passed away years ago, his tail is bent in the pic because of his position at the time):

This is 'AL' - he's the pleco I have now - still a baby & just starting to get all his spikes on his face:

Nope, you don't need plecos IMO.

I didn't have any plecos in my tank for about 2 years from the time that Damien died & I got AL, but mainly that's because they are hard to get in my area, so it took that long to even get my hands on one when some stock arrived.

Even if you do get an algae bloom, just cutting the lights for a couple of days will keep it in check; I don't recommend using any of those algae destroyer chemicals as they can be toxic to fish, but to each their own I suppose.

You don't 'need' plecos, but their are alot of really nice looking ones that make nice addition to tank. For my 120g datnoid tank, just hav a Raphael catfish that cleans up the bottom. Don't hav much algae problems with FW anymore tho, none hav any HO lighting over them, so magnetic glass cleaner once a week keeps glass nice n clear
