Really need plecos in tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You don't NEED Plecos but most people like keeping them just because they look cool. I have a gold nugget pleco in my 72 gal and he's one of my favorite fish.

As stated above, it's better to manually remove the algae and skip the pleco if thats what your trying to accomplish. Bristlenose, rubberlipped and ottos do actually consume quite a bit of algae though. L52 is another small fish that consumes lots of algae and my large common eats tons of it, but the trade off in waste is pretty ridiculous...poop machine is an understatement.

However, i am one of those who keeps loricariids because I find them fascinating and my common is one of my most personable fish. Always on the move, feeds upside down at the surface. But they all crap tons......

I have 2 commons, 3 high fins, 1 clown, and a BN pleco, I love plecos, they are just so awesome looking, but yes they poop like mad only fish worse is a Goldfish and I have 7 of those. If you want plants in the tank don't get a pleco will up root them or just eat it. Clown plecos are cool to look at if you can get it out of hiding and it doesn't eat algae useless but a nice looking pleco.

I keep many, but not for algae, because I love em! Got a large Common 14" in my 180, a 6" high-fin spotted in the 37, and a clown, rubber-lip, bristlenose, and long-fin albino bristlenose (my favorite!) in my 55.
