Really want a stingray, what do i need?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
adjust the rays to your ph, a stable ph is alot better then trying to keep it at one level when its trying to be at another.

yes the filters sound fine 2 xp4 will cope just fine aslong as they are full of decent quality bio media.

as far as water changes are concernd, less water more often is best. one huge WC a week is ok but its alot better to do a few smaller ones threw the week. it stops the large change in water chemistry so its better for your ray.

i do around a 35 to 40% WC every 2 days on my system.

mine is a rio 400 which is linked to a 4ft x10x15 on the wall above.
filtration 2x ehime external, fluval 4 internal and also ha HOB filter on the top tank. i removed the stupid plastic flow plate from the HOB and filled it to the max with bio media.
then i do around a 35% to 40% WC every 2 days.

my stock list

2x 5" disc pearl rays
1x 8" disc motoro
5/6" flagtail
5/6" campbelli dat
6" clown knife

in the 4ft
6x 4" australian giant glass fish
3x 3 to 4" asian soles
1x 2.5" indo dat
2x 4"channa fire&ice

every thing runs fine.

past setups have been alot better, as in 8x4x2 tanks running huge sumps ect but im just returning after a long break from fish keeping so im rebuilding my collection.

Thank you very much alll. Especcially Sharp tooth. I will make a thread about the tank soon. When i start changing the tank completely.

About the gravel. is this ok? I mean is this NOT BAD for the stingray. The Firemouth is about 5-6" so you can see how large the gravel is. but it is smooth. Very smooth.

That gravel should be fine, 2 WC 50% a week will be good, 2 XP4 should be enough , water temp can differ from ray keeper to ray keeper. I keep mine at 84F, ph should be around 7, but as long as the ph is stable you should be fine.

to be honest, i dont like the gravel and wouldent use it with a ray. it may not cause a problem but personally i wouldent use it.

the very small round pea gravel is as large a gravel as im happy using.
im trying barebottom in my new tank but im having second thoughts about it already. fine pea gravel is what ill probably end up with.

oh yer and if the ray is going in that tank, i hope you not wanting to keep the plants nice. a ray will more then likely end up digging them up and exposing roots, not so much when small but as soon as it gets a bit of size and weight on it will have all the gravel moved.

whats under the gravel? anything to help the plants? ive sween planted tanks with different layers.

There are no plants anymore. I took em out two weeks ago. I am thinking of instead of buying two XP4 i will just add 1 XP4 to my XP3.
Actually i recently changed my gravel from sand to this so i dont know if im ready to do it in the next 2 months. (not because im to lazy to do it i just really liked that gravel).

I was thinking about the setup. And a few slow growing monsters would look great i thought.
So when i put the fish in the tank should i add the ray first or the last?

This was the setup i was thinking about.
1x Potamotrygon Reticulata
1x Polypterus Bichir Lapradei
1x Chitala Chitala Albino
1x Datnoides Microlepsis
Will be getting them all at about 4"

I also have some questions in ray breeding.
Lets say if i wanted to breed Motoros.
How old/large does the ray have to be to be mature?
How can i sex them?
What tank size would i need (measurements)?
How long do they carry the pups?
How many pups do they usually have?

i guess the search feature is broken again..........
