Howdy,

Let's take a poll of what may be reasons for a cohabitated, formerly peaceful shoal of piranhas to suddenly attack each other, and what (if anything) can be ruled out for sure. Feel free to post what's not listed.

Bring it on!

lol all of those reasons except the high/low ph (as long as its stable it shouldnt matter) lighting changes and excessive water changes

and harley are u doing this poll cause your pirayas atacked each other ? if so they didnt have a reason for it they jsut did it cause there pirayas

I think we had 5 in a 37 gallon tank for a while at work. If we kept them well fed and didn't introduce any stress they didn't bite each other. I voted for feeding or introduction of new fish.

because it's one crazy SOB, lol
but I think agression is caused by hunger for sure. any animal is aggressive when it's hungry and I also think temperature is a key as well. actually hunger, higher temperature and poor water quality and low pH all simulates dry season in the amazon and over millions of years I think they pretty much have that coded in their DNA...so they all know once dry season comes, they better be one tough SOB other wise they may just die off. just some crazy thoughts... :)

and of course the fish's personality as well, if one is one crazy b!@tch, it'll always be regardless if it's dry or wet season

LOL. No, fortunately they are getting along quite well. :) I would've expected to have lost a couple by now, but the original 6 are still doing well. I am just trying to prevent the preventable and see what other members experienced.

nice poll buddy

There are three main reasons for agessions, and according to my own experience this three are the most common:

1.- Hunger.

2.- Shoal outgrowing the tank.

3.- Temperature.

Cheers.
