Reasons to Keep North American Native Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its the pride you get knowing that you are the one that caught this fish and raised it to a size that would make fishermen envious to catch.

The surprise look on peoples faces when you told them you caught it in the creek. Many people don't realise how many different species of fish that live in our waters. Most people only know of the gamefish.

i have never kept natives but i am considering going and collecting some and my reasons for keeping them are you dont necssesarly need a heater, collect your own fish, there free to obtain, grow quickly and are enjoyable not knowing exactly what your fish will look like when its full grown

another good reason!!!

i try to provide a exact replica of the outdoor environment but.....my tank fish seem more willing to eat a cheep pellet than a 6 dollar fish lure.

I enjoy showing people all the different fish living in our area, not just the gamefish everybody knows about. Also like the actual collecting process.

Empty hook, fish are extremely hungry or not used to hooks. Bottom line, in the wild, either the fish strike whatever hits the water or they might not eat.

I am a little biased here about the sunfish and bullheads. I currently own bluegills, warmouths, greens, shellcracker and yellow and brown bullheads. These fish never disappoint in interaction, tenacity, color and antics. I can tell the difference between them all. There is something unique about all of them even though many come from the same species.

No heaters, no disease, minimum or no parasites, extremely hardy and very easy to feed.

The whole process of collecting, keeping, and learning about the natives is why I have my 450g in Natives now. I have been fishing since I was 2 years old have only caught one green sunfish that was bigger than then one I have raised up.
