Ignorant people tend to read more into things that are not actually there,unfortunately.
Keeping endangered species is not the right thing to do.Period.

The OP should contact the proper authorities,explain what happened,and turn over the fish to someone who knows what to do with them.
That would be the right thing to do.

BTW,I have no problem with wild caught fish being kept as pets as long as they are not endangered.
