Recognize this pump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i was thinking a mag9..

I didn't even need a heater on my 250 when i was running a magdrive 24 :D Was always 86 degrees!!! :D

Correction...my MD7's are pretty old, so they might be different from a design change. The date on one of the MD7's is 02/99. The date on my MD24 is 10/04 and it has the same casing as yours. Yours could be an MD7 or MD9.

The pump housing size in relation to the impeller housing screws and the power cord was my clue that it can't be a MD12 or larger. But you are right that they look the same.

the mag 2,3,5,and 7 all use the same housing shorter and wider than the 9.5,12,and 18. you can also use diffrent impellers as long as the housing is the same. example a mag 7 impeller in a mag 3 housing and it will work.

Ok, that's good to know. I haven't encountered a 9 but I have some 7's, a 12 and 24, had a 18. It definitely isn't a 12 or anywhere close, so it can't be a 9. Its size is really close to a 7 and from the size of the tank, I would say that it can't be a 5 or smaller. From the tank's requirements, I would have put my money on it not being a 7.

...looks like shifting gears would be a good thing.

The mirror was a good idea. Why didn't I think of that one??? It's a 9.5b So that makes it 950 GPH so I have a sump turnover of about 8.6 times/hour. That seems about adequate for sump turnover doesn't it? The 12 is about $30 more.

8.6 per hour is good. Keep an eye on the buy and sell section or eBay for some good deals. I think a backup wouldn't have to be a new one. All of mine had been in storage for several years and it hasn't affected any of them. You might want to consider putting unions on your pump and on the backup. That way if it goes bad at the worst possible time, you won't have to do any plumbing work. You'd only have to loosen the unions and swap the pumps.
