convicts???

You can put those in a bucket and they will breed for you.

Try to avoid the mistakes made by all of us on the board. Don't go for the common cichlid and then decide to get rid of them cause everyone else has them. Which souds like the problem you are having right now.

Here is one you should look up. The cockatoo dwarf triple red. They max out at 2 or so inches. Photo isn't mine.

I think Rams are awesome, but they aren't aggressive and definitely are not monsters.

Yeah I was stunned when I saw it.

FYI ppl, it needs to fit in a 55.

I'm new to this forum and i currently have a 55g tank that has a few community fish in it that i'm going to get rid of. Could you guys make a suggestion to what kind of fish that i should put in this tank that could live in it for life. I know 13" is not very deep for most large cichlids but i'm sure there is one that will fit.

How about some nicaraguensis? very pretty fish, max size something like 8 inches.
Or Honduran red points- they're like convicts, only much prettier. Or kribs, or a variety of geophagus or gymnogeophagus.
question- do you want live palnts? do you want other fish or just the cichlids?

I'd do a pair of honduran red points, a pair of Thorichthys sp. 'mixteco gold' (both I think are available through Rapps right now), ~8-10 mollies, platys or swordtails, a medium sized catfish (lace synodontis, syno. schoutedeni or a raphael cat) and a bristlenose pleco. :headbang2

try a lyonsi. i think they top out around 7 or 8". very pretty fish
redhead severums are nice
maybe a chocolate, but he might get kind of big
salvinis are nice too but more common than the other guys.

I would go with some africans for two reasons #1 they have great color #2 u can over stock the tank so it would be a VERY active tank....
