I recently set up my 125 gallon tank with 3 Hydro sponge V's and am currently using a "whisper" 100 to pump air into them but the noise that air pump makes could make the dead rise from their graves.
I am thinking that a couple power heads will be less noisy but not sure on what kind to get that will fit the Hydro V...

My tank is 6ft x 2.5ft x 2ft if that helps. Anybody also use a power head with a Hydro V? I could use some help here..Thanks

Somthing like an Aquaclear 50 or 70 can handle a Hydor 5. I see them in PetSmart all the time.

I have an air pump with four outlets that is pretty quiet. It has a big fat knob to adjust the flow too. It's way more quiet than the Whisper. I'll get you the brand and model when I get home.

Ill check out that air pump since i do like the sight of bubbles but mine is just too damn noisy...i am only guessing that powerheads wont be as noisy.. im sure there will be some noise but hopefully less

First off those dimensions are incorrect for a 125gal. Standard 125 g LxWxH = 72 x 18 x 21 inches or 6'x1.5'x1.8'

A 6ft x 2.5ft x 2ft tank 'assuming' the width is 2' equates to a 225gallon aquarium. So if you have measured this tank and these dimensions are indeed correct you have a /\/\0N$T3R TANK!

Sorry for the minor derail I just wanted to clear that up because filtering a 125 or a 225 is a massive difference!

If I were you I would go with Cobalt PH, cheap price and solid: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=24144-Great prices and free S&H! They are made to fit sponge filters, Skimmers, reactors etc.

OR you could do what I did:

Tee'd two air outputs into one that goes to the same sponge filter and man is it powerful, relatively cheap airpump and you can adjust output. Just an idea.

On another Important note you definitely want one of those sponge filters running on air that way if you have a power outage you can hook up a battery powered airpump http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3693 Not only will it circulate water but since some beneficial bacteria will be housed inside the sponge it will help with ammonia~nitrate conversion. I have my airpump hooked up to a battery backup unit made for computers, bought it at goodwill for 5$ and it keeps it running full blast for almost 24 hours, if I dial the pump down to medium sure I could get 36 hours.

Or if you got the money here's a good suggestion http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=8120

Pretty Rad imo but whatever way you choose to go I wish you the best and I hope it is a 225 :D:beer::beer:

ahhh yeah i was just guessing on the dimensions but it is indeed a 125 gallon tank, sorry to disappoint you.. lol

i was planning to just use a couple powerheads for each end of the tank and a small air pump for the middle in case of an emergency. The only real reason i want to go with a powerhead is that i think it will be more quiet. I dont know why i think this maybe its just because my air pump is so loud now...someone please correct me if i am wrong...

How did you get the battery back up unit for computers to work.. i think thats beyond my capability.. but it sounds interesting!

thanks for all the kind replies

You just have a load airpimp IMO. The battery backup has normal plugs. Anything can be plugged into them via power cord. No mods necessary! I could put my Xbox on battery back up lol or my phone charger.
