Recommendations on media for my new FX5

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the 125 has a single fx5 on it with 3 boxes of media and thats it ... works great .. the sponges do great for mech and bio and the rings hold all the other BB .. never have problems and the water is clear ...

the 150 has a fx5 same set up but also a rena3 with a stock set up .. and that tank is also great ...

im not huge on OVER kill .. but i do have plenty of filtration .. no need to have 2 fx5's on a 75 gal tank .. waste of money and filtration ..

polishing pads asr pretty much a waste in there, will probably clog really quick, unless you don't have messy fish at all.

Agreed but with the new gravel addition I wanted to pull as much of the crap from the water as possible. Will prolly remove them in a day or so.

Messy.....have you ever seen a 12" JD eat??...LOL He is akin to watching a hog at the slop trough.

i agree. polishing pads are fine and clog easily. i use the foam pads that are made specifically for a fx5 and i use nylon bags of carbon and some other stuff, made by chemi pure. i also have 2 hydor koralia 4's for water movement. wow, i forgot about bio-balls. i use those as well, for biological filtration.

well my sa/cas are extremelyt messy too, think more food flies out of their gills than in their stomachs, all i use in my fx5s is ceramic rings in all three trays and a medium filter pad on the very top and it works wonderfull, water stays nice and clear.

pond matrix , or bio glass by fluval. Are cheaper options

How many boxes of biomax will an FX5 hold? Assuming all three baskets. I just got one off of eBay and need to buy the biomax.

Well if you are filling just the center of all 3 baskets it would easily hold 6 boxes. I would just fill one and mix it up in the other 2...IE pot scrubbies or some lava rock...maybe even a couple small bio balls.
