There are so many MFK'ers who breed so many different types of fish whether for resale, keeps, or feeders.

I was thinking guppies & mollies thinking/hoping these would give you live fry faster but probably not that many in #'s, yes or no?

better egg layers? which ones? but aren't they harder to spawn?

thx all

Guppies breed faster than mollies. Just keep as many you need to give you the number of feeders you want. You can also think of mouth brooding cichlids for an ornamental bonus.

I used to feed convict fry to my discus. You can get a pair to spawn about every 24 days.

Thx folks.

On convicts - any special care 2help them spawn, & afterwards leave them be or separate them? What to feed them? What temperatures & type of water?

I have some Pink, or albino some people call them convicts. Put the water temp at 80 do regular 25% w/c a week and they will breed like mad. I have gotten over 100 fry a batch from 2" pink cons. Aslong as you feed the parents they will feed fry also. When I move the fry over to another tank I just crush pellets to powder(it sinks to them and they love it)

but moreless convicts breed on their own :)

oh yeah some clay flowerpots are good for them in the tank also...

don't bother feeding your discus live fish. The risks of disease transmission are not worth it. I have kept discus for too long to remember and never fed them live fish, not even to wild caught fish. There are so many completely adequate granulates and deep frozen foods readily available that there is no need to feed them live fish. Plus, you will never be stuck for food. It is so easy to make your own beefheart, turkeyheart, fish, etc. discus food that it is really not worth the effort to breed feeder fish. You can add garlic (to keep stomach and intestine parasite numbers low) to your food mix, never mind vitamines and various other supplements. Your discus will also need a certain amount of plant based food which you cannot add to your feeder fish.
If you insist on giving them live food, why not breed some freshwater shrimp? They take up less space and the likelyhood of disease transmission is considerably lower than feeding live fish

i agree with apisto. different species as feeds is better because they don't have the same types of parasites and diseases. i feed my giant snakehead chicken fillet and saltwater fish(boiled) to stay away from parasites and diseases.

cheers

Brine shrimp and be done with it.

The chances of you having small enough fry to feed other discus fry when they are ready will be impossible.

so just hatch out some brine shrimp in a pop bottle and you are all set. They also sell the continuous hatchers that go inside the fry tank.

hikari discus pellets and frozen brineshrimp done
