Hello everyone!! I have a 125 gal freshwater tank set up. My Oscar died today so now all I have in there is a little Arawana. We've only had this Arawana for a couple of weeks; but are realizing after doing much research that we will need a bigger tank for it when it grows and I cant get any bigger that what I have at the moment (Although I plan on building a mighty huge 300+ in a few years when I move).

So we are gonna call the lfs tomorrow and see if they will let us trade in the arawana (hopefully yes; he's still quite small)

This will leave me with a 125 and a pleco.......

We plan on getting another Oscar cause I love them so much, but what is something or somethings good to put with it? I was thinking of a Texas but my hubby wants a shark, even though I try to tell him that we need a bigger tank for that....

Although I am new to this site what are your recommendations? THe site I previously researched on was a little anal about tank size....

Any input would be really appreciated I am trying to educate myself also.....

P.S. We dont like the africans or anything like that, we like big, mean fish!!!!

well, you could try to go for a Jag, midas, trimac, red devil, flower horn, or any of the other large cichlids.....but the agression could easily be a problem. With fish like that its trial and error. I keep all kinds of things with my oscar, but most would outgrow the 125 in short time. I keep them in a 300 and they are close to outgrowing it lol.

WELCOME TO MFK!

Thanks for the advice... I guess I will have to see what is available... If I stay with the Oscar, and maybe go with something else medium sized then what? I've had Jack Dempseys and green terrors and they always seem to beat up my oscars...

its really hard to tell....unless all fish seem to have a different attitude. Unless you try it you'll never really know....what kind of fish did you have in mind/

Like I said earlier I would like a texas, but I never really see them for sale in the lfs. The other site basically said you cant have more than 2 O's in a 125 which is a little bit much.. And someone else on this site posted that they have 3 plus a JD and they are all fine.. While I agree that a 55 or 70 gal is MIN for one Oscar, a 125 is pretty big for the average fishkeeper. Discovering this site is awesome, and so that is why I am asking for advice on what you think will be ok with the Oscar... I like O's b/c of their personality.. FH is too aggressive... so I am lost.... :)

Try a Clown Knife or better yet a Royal Clown Knife, Tin Foil Barbs, Silver Dollars, Tiger Shovelnose Cat, Pacu, and DEFFINATELY keep the Arrowana. They are way cool !!! I grew one to about 18 inches in a 75 gallon and he did fine. Once you get one of those up to that size, some of the pet shops will give you some good money or trade for one of them. All of the above fish can get good size and usually will get along with Oscars. If you really want them to be mean, maybe you could stir the tank with a ball bat every so often or something, Ha Ha.

Did upl8dave just recommend a pacu??? :screwy:

I respectfully disagree with that suggestion bro...

See I am worried that they wont take him when he gets too big; I find the lfs in my area are always not wanting to do trade ins..... I definitely cant get my 300 gal anytime soon, how long will it take the arrowana to grow to 3 feet? He is pretty for a Silver...

I have a bloodparrot with my one oscar and they get along great. They do all have individual personalities so it is kind of hit or miss..... Also, you would probably want to get the bloodparrot larger to start off cause the oscars grow so quickly. Use to have my JD in the same tank as my oscar and that did not work out very well.... So I agree with you on that point!!! :)

I have a 125 and I keep Datnoids, which have great personalities for fish. The key to having a big fish in a 125 is to make sure it doesnt get too long. big cichlids are a good way to go, like a green terror. I have a heavily planted tank, which is my preference, and that opens up options to fish that like alot of cover like snakeheads and such... which are probably illegal there.
