You might enjoy reading this thread I did on goonches a few months ago. It tells in detail about both of those pictures.

When talking about a fish that has the genetic potential to get 7' long and over 230 pounds, it is impossible to over estimate the size of tank that you need.

For the average fish kept by the average hobbyist, I would suggest no less than 1000 gallons for an adult fish, though over a sufficiently long period of time even that will prove to be too small.

So would you recommend a 1000g tank from the get go?

About 2 weeks ago, I was watching Monster Fish and Zeb Hogen said that the Goonch gets to about 10' and 300+ pounds, is this an over estimation or they actually do have the potential to get to that?

Only if you manage to get an adult. Obviously if you first acquire a 3" fingerling it'd be lost in a 1000 gallon tank.

I'd wager they do have the potential to get to those sizes based on how relatively common 6 foot plus, 150 pound plus goonches are. I'd say that while its possible, its about as likely as a 7', 300 pound blue cat from North America, a 12' wels or a 600 pound piraiba. They all have reliable reports from antiquity of those sizes, but we're not likely to see one in our day and age thanks to the extreme fishing pressure exerted on these large fish from around the world.

Yeah that's true, it's unfortunate. I would love to see Huge Specimens of these large species. Maybe one day we will. Fingers crossed :D
