Recreating a River?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i know but most fish 'commonly' seen are usually from the amazon so the specificity doesn't really click, with me at least. but yes you are right.

I'm not positive of the river I saw on the show I was watching (It was Planet Earth's "Freshwater" Episode, and they did a mountain river), however it had extremely fast moving water, and one of the inhabitants was a Bamboo Shrimp, the filter feeder ones. I believe another was a Centipede-looking thing, another kind of invert. I'd be interested in learning how something like that could be re-created. I don't think I'd try it, but I think it'd be fun to learn about how I would if I was going to.

biotope does not mean either. biotope is a exact/near represenation of whatever your recreating. a asian stream biotope is a representation of an asian stream down to the fish plants and decor.

now you gotta kinda follow me hear cause it's gonna get tricky. LOL (im soo inarticulate)
in something like a 55 or 125 or other long low tank build a hillside, the same way that people build faux rock backgrounds on their tanks making lots of little pools and larger pools and falls and slopes and stuff. then use the inflow to a sump or canister filters (sumps better you can get more powerful return pumps) and the return at the top of the hill and i think that would work pretty good.

phew....:D

sorry this is for fast flow mountainy streamy stuff

heres a basic guide. first decide what you would like to do. so the area fast or stagnent rivers, wether its a bank of the river or the pools or bottom wether you want sand or rock substrate also choose decor and how you can use decor for your advantage.(for example wood would make your water softer.) also decide fish and plants. let the fish you want dictate your decisoion not the size of your tank.once decided gather equipment and remember bigger=better. then setup your tank etc.

Oh, I understand what a Biotope is, as well as how to set up the tank and make it look aesthetically pleasing, I'm just curious as to what would most accuratly recreatre a river-type setting (ie, how to make the water current extremely fast without splashing over the top of the tank, or how to effectivly put banks on it while still being able to view it).

banks are easy pending on what substrate it would be. the best way i can think of adding current is a diy that i dont think has been done before. the idea is you have a plate that sit on one end and you hook 2 massive powerheads on it in thisplate there are large hole(bigger then a spray bar). call it a spray plate.you woulld get current on the bottom and top. if you were to have sand banks add some rocks and back them with sand too hide the rocks. gravel same kinda thing. as for rocks.......

PILE ON!!!
