I keep having a recurring tank smell that I have posted about several times. The smell randomly comes and I haven't been able to figure out why. I finally think I have an idea. He smell seems to occur when I feed my rhom. He feeds very sparingly so like once every fews weeks.

Is it possible that because he goes so long without feeding there is spike in bio activity when he does feed that cusses the smell? Water parameters are always good when these occurs. The tank is a 180g running 3 ac110s with 1 10-11in rhom and a 5in manueli.

I have Hermit Crabs(sw) and when I feed them the tank(and area) stinks for a few hours then goes away. Their food smells fine before dropping it in. So, what you said doesn't surprise me.

Get rid of the ac 110 and get a canister filter. A sun sun 404 b would be perfect I had the same problem with my water smelling I had ac 110 ac 50 and another 55 gallon filter and did water twice a week after a while those filters can only do so much I think

Why do you feed him like that? Just curious.

Adult piranha don't need to eat that frequently and often even fast. My guy has gone as long as 6 weeks without eating.

wow, every two weeks. thats pretty cool haha.

I have 8 AC 500's (110) running in one room - and no odor. Unless the filters require cleaning, it sure as hell isn't a filter issue.

IMO this thread will end the same as the last time, impossible to figure out without being present to evaluate hands on.

3 AC 110'S far and away exceed the mech/bio capacity of a sunsun lol. especially mech.

Yeah. I have more media in the AC110s than I had in the FX5 I was using before. I just find it odd that the smell occurs 1-2 days after feeding. There is also very food left over if at all as I observe the fish eat the food.

I'm just speaking from my experience it's something about them filters that can only do so much and you also can put what you want in you canisters I put as much mech and everything else in it I want. The only thing I can say is to try it the ac 110 is not working for the smell won't hurt to try something else
