lately ive noticed red algae/slime growing in my 150 tank at first i thought it looked cool but then it started growing like crazy on my lace rocks it looks like a half wet coat of paint (you know how you could peel it off perfectly) whats causing this? what can i do? is it something bad? i just did a waterchange and siphoned/cleaned most of it out my lighting is a coralife with 3 different settings blue/purple, white, moonlight leds ------jey

a few things to prevent/kill algae... block natural sunlight, promote c02 in tank for regular plants, as they will compete for nutrients, alot of algae do not do well in higher temps, buy certain fish or algae that eat that specific algae, physically remove all of it with razor blades. I may be wrong about the temp thing, but im 99 percent sure of the rest of it.

algae thrives in nitrate rich water as well, water changes is the cure for almost everything in an aquarium as far as i've seen. this is not the only thing contributing, but i'll put money on it that it's not helping if you have high nitrate.

Howdy,

How long have you had these lights for, and has it always worked w/o producing algae? I'd almost suspect that the blue/purple is the culprit.

the lighting has been on there for a couple months now, you guys think that is the problem

That seems at least likely to me. Purple lights are notorious to produce algae. You had these lights for two months, and your problems occurred "lately". Can you specify "lately"? What lighting did you have before, and have you had the same problem before you got these lights?

i should of worded it better the algae came about the same time i put the new lighting on before i was using some cheap home depot plant and aquarium lights

Hmmm... didn't know the red slime attacked freshwater as well. Get RedSlime Cure, its a small vial of yellow powder... it kills it within 2 days its gone. ALSO good tip is PolyOX... oxidizes organic matter (redslime) on contact...i love that stuff and i have a reef tank
