A few are starting to be imported here to NZ, they're retailing for $1800NZ (around $1300US at current exchange rates) so I'm guessing they're lower grade reds. I saw one today (I think almost all the others have been pre-sold) and it looked pale pinkish, with a slightly darker orange-red tail, almost a similar colour to a pink convict. The guy was saying they'll colour up more as they get older, it was probably around 8". How much does their colour improve with age?

I'm not really fussed about all the fancy colours, and if I could get a plain low grade green/whatever the cheap ones are for 1/4 the price I'd be happy. How do their prices usually rate over seas? The guy was telling me golds and rtg's were more expensive than these reds, is that normal? I thought it was usually the other way around, or are these just really low grade reds?

could u post some pics so tat we all could take a look?

well if he ask juz say uR making sure uR not getting conned... =) cheers...

just get a red tail gold you cant go wrong with one of them and it will be cheaper

their is no garantee that it will get any redder with a red tail gold they all turn out about the same

red aros tend to show colour later down the track. ive seen pale red almost pinkish-red aros that have turned blood red when they got bigger.

1300 seems like a really decent prize. Almost too decent. They cost around 1500 here in Canada, and the market here is pretty strong, so the prices are supposed to be fairly good. So 1300 seems almost fishy (no pun). Ask for certificate, they may be 1.5red, and not Super Red (or grade 1).

yeh they definitely mature with age. especially the really high grade reds which sumtimes take years to mature with colour. the chilli red arowana (one of the most expensive) actually appears GREEN in its youth. its considered one of the ugliest juvenile arows but after 2-3 years...ull see y they r so expensive...the prices seem expensive for RTGs and normal reds. maybe cause they just started retailing them in NZ therefore supply is low but demand high. i think its safer to stick with the RTG since u duno anything bout the other reds. best of luck!

Got a pic of a different one, anther shop has two of them. So its not uncommon for them to colour up with age? That a releif!! (Not that I can afford one right now). They are a 'lower grade' red according to the importer, can get better ones in for more $$. Excuse the quality, I snapped it on my phone while the shop no one was watching!

It looks like a grade 2 red to me, also known as a 1.5 red or banjar red. It won't develop to the same stunning adult fish the grade 1 (super reds) potentially do, but it's still a beautiful fish.

Why don't you get one, and if you like it ... you'll definately love an SR! :D
